Golden Paste for Horses
Turmeric, a root with a bright orange-yellow interior (very similar to ginger) has made quite the name for itself in recent years - largely due to its Curcumin content, which has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.
Just eating the root or dried powder may not allow for full absorption though and studies have found that adding fresh ground pepper is essential, and including a fat source, such as coconut oil, takes it one step further. There are turmeric supplements in the form of tablets or capsules, or there is the option of making the infamous golden paste.
Golden Paste is a gently warmed combination of dried turmeric curcumin powder and water, combined with coconut oil and fresh ground pepper. It has become one of the top methods of choice for ingesting the herb.
There are few things better than a hot cup of ‘golden milk’ before bed, which you could make with this paste - or you can use the paste to give your horses! If you buy your turmeric in bulk, the cost savings are immense when compared to buying little jars of it in the store. Golden Paste for horses is a little less convenient than a pelleted supplement, as it is best kept in the fridge. It is also very colorful and it will stain containers, possibly buckets and definitely your hands.
Golden Paste Ingredients:
1/2 Cup Organic Turmeric Curcumin Powder
1 Cup Filtered Water
1/3 Cup Coconut Oil or Other
2 - 3 Tsp of Fresh Ground Black Pepper
Process: Combine turmeric and water in a saucepan and stir over low heat for about 7 - 10 minutes. Turn the heat off, add in the oil and pepper, stir well.
Let cool and then place into a well sealed container! This recipe filled a 4oz plastic container to the brim.
I typically use a recycled yogurt container or something similar as the turmeric will stain plastic and I’d rather keep my nicer containers clean!
Storage: Best if kept in the refrigerator and used within 2 weeks, otherwise you can freeze it! A convenient way of storing pre-measured doses is to buy some candy or ice trays, spread the paste and freeze! This also keeps your paste fresher for longer, rather than having to consume within two weeks if left in the fridge!
Feeding to Horses: Start with 1 tsp/day and gradually increase to 1 - 2 Tbsp.
Feeding to Yourself: I’d start with a 1/4 tsp until you’re used to the taste. Add to warm milk, tea, coffee, a smoothie, salad dressings, the options are endless.
